Grok chat
A mind across the table
You type. It answers. Perfect for ideas, explanations, and first drafts. You still copy the answer and do the rest.
Lesson 00 · Start here
If you have asked Grok or ChatGPT a question, you already know half of this. Chat answers. This course is about helpers that can actually do the work — open email, click around a website, change a file — and then show you the result.
The one picture to keep
Chat is a brilliant advisor sitting across the table with its hands in its lap. An agent is a teammate who can get up and use the computer. Same smarts. Different job.
You might be thinking this is just a fancier chat. It isn’t. The leap is not smarter words. It is who does the clicking.
Grok chat
You type. It answers. Perfect for ideas, explanations, and first drafts. You still copy the answer and do the rest.
Grok Bot
You message them like a coworker. They log into your apps, do the task, and keep working after you close your laptop.
Grok Build
Sits in a folder of files on your machine. It can read and change those files while you watch. You say yes before anything is saved for good.
When you finish, you can
About 40 minutes · no computer skills needed
Play the demos. Check your answers. At the end you get a first job you can copy for Grok Bot, and one for Grok Build if you ever work in a folder of files.
Grok Bot is new (a test version, as of August 2026). This course uses everyday words on purpose.
That leftover work is the whole point. Chat is great at answers. Helpers that can act are built to finish the job.
Lesson 01 · The world you know
Grok in the browser or the Grok app is chat. You type. It replies. Sometimes it looks things up or makes a picture. The answer still lives in the chat box. You carry it into the real world.
Grok, ChatGPT, Claude — same deal: you are the hands. The AI makes words (or a picture) in a box. You do the rest.
For questions, learning, and first drafts, chat is the right tool. The trouble starts when the job is not “tell me,” but “please go do it.”
Press play. This is a good chat. Notice what Maya still has to do after the last bubble.
The answer was useful — and unfinished. Maya still has to open her email, find the numbers, paste the outline, and hit send. Chat got her to “almost.” Helpers that can act exist for the rest.
Lesson 02 · The leftover work
Three small chores add up. You paste info in. You copy the answer out. When something goes wrong, you paste the problem back. A helper that can act does those chores itself.
You retype the email, the spreadsheet, or “here’s what happened” so the AI can see anything at all.
You take the reply into Gmail, a document, a website editor, or a customer list and make it real.
The number is wrong, the page looks different, something breaks. Back into chat it goes.
Job: Change the big title on a website, make sure it still works, and save it. Step through each path.
Chat path · you are the hands
Helper path · it can act
This is why a helper that can act is not just “a smarter chat.” The brain can be the same. The difference is who walks over to the real files and does the clicking.
Lesson 03 · The doing loop
People call this agentic AI. Fancy word. Plain meaning: not just talk. Chat is one reply. An agent is a worker. It keeps going until the job is done, it is stuck, or it needs you.
Chat is asking a brilliant librarian what books exist. An agent is a research helper who can pull the books, take notes, notice a missing chapter, and bring you a one-page brief — then ask before they publish it.
A good helper does not “go wild.” It stops for passwords, payments, sending, deleting, or anything live that customers will see. Power with no pause button is just a faster mess.
Lesson 04 · Why this is a bigger deal than it looks
If chat already feels like magic, a helper that can act can feel like “the same thing, plus extra steps.” It is not. It is a different kind of helper.
The 90 / 10 problem
There is a huge difference between 90% done and 100% done. Most AI gets you almost there. A helper can finish because the work lands where a person would put it — in the real inbox, file, or website.
Chat says “try this.” A helper tries it, sees if it worked, and tries again if it did not. That is why it is more dependable — not because it “sounds sure.”
You will always forget a message, a spreadsheet row, or a file. A helper opens the real inbox, the real website, the real folder. What is actually there beats what you remembered to paste.
The old way: something breaks → copy it → paste into chat → copy the fix → try again. A helper does that back-and-forth itself. You only step in for judgment, risk, and “should we?”
Chat is one conversation. Grok Bot can run a few named teammates overnight. Grok Build can send helpers to look around and change files at the same time. You become the person who reviews work, not the person who moves every piece by hand.
A named Grok Bot keeps notes, files, logins, and repeating jobs. Grok Build remembers the folder it is in and how you like things done. The next task starts from last week, not from zero.
A draft in a chat window is not a sent email, a saved file, or an updated list. Helpers that can act work inside the real apps, so “done” means done.
Lesson 05 · Grok Bot
You message them like a coworker. They log into the apps you already use, click around like a person, and keep going after you close your laptop. Several bots can run at once and talk to each other.
It is still a test version (as of August 2026). You need a higher-end Grok or Cursor plan. There is an app for Mac, Windows, and iPhone.
Lesson 06 · Grok Build
If you do not make websites or apps, you can still learn the idea and skip the install. Bot is the everyday teammate. Build is for when the work is a pile of files on the machine in front of you.
You do not have to do this today. When you want to, a helper can walk you through install. The short version:
If that sounds like “someone who already uses a computer for work,” that is fine. Remember the idea: Build lives on your machine. Bot lives on a computer that is not yours.
This is fake. Your real files are safe. Try typing: what is in this folder, fix the login problem, make a plan first, or help.
When the job is fuzzy, it looks around and writes a plan. You say yes, ask for changes, or comment — before any real files are edited.
It can send a helper to look around, and another to make the change, at the same time. They report back. They cannot make more helpers of their own, so it does not get out of hand.
If you do the same job often, you can save the steps. Next time it already knows the method.
Lesson 07 · The big difference
Grok Bot and Grok Build can both do things. Mixing them up is the most common beginner mistake. One is a teammate at their own desk, somewhere on the internet. The other is a teammate sitting at YOUR desk, in YOUR folder.
The buttons above send a real-life need to chat, Bot, or Build. There is no prize for using the fanciest tool.
| If you care about… | Grok Bot | Grok Build |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | A computer on the internet. You message it from your computer or phone. | Your computer. Inside a folder of files. |
| Easy picture | A named coworker you hired | A helper sitting next to you at your desk |
| What computer? | Its own: browser, files, logins to your apps | Yours: the files and programs already on your machine |
| When the laptop closes | Keeps working | Stops (you were using it on that laptop) |
| How you talk to it | Like texting a coworker. You can watch their screen if you want. | A full-screen window that shows what it is reading and changing |
| Best at | Jobs that hop across email, websites, spreadsheets, and customer lists | Jobs inside a folder: explain it, change it, check it still works |
| Who they are | Named bots with a job title, that stick around | You open it in a folder, do some work, and can come back later. |
| How they learn a process | Show them once, save it, put it on a schedule | You tell it the rules for that folder. It follows them next time. |
| More than one at once | Many bots. They can message each other. | Extra helpers working at the same time, then they report back |
| Overnight work | Yes — repeating jobs while you sleep | Not really. It works while you are there (or someone starts it) |
| Logging into everyday apps | Signs in like a person, even on messy websites | Uses what is already on your computer, plus extra apps you connect |
| Who it is for | Anyone who works in apps — sales, office work, support, and more | People working in a folder of files on their own computer |
| Safety | It asks before sending, paying, or deleting. You type passwords yourself. | It asks before changing files. You look at the changes first. |
| Gotcha | All your bots share one computer. A login for one is a login for all. | It can see the files in that folder. That is why it asks first. |
The work hops across websites and apps. You want a named owner. You want it to keep going at 2am. You would otherwise hire a sharp intern with a laptop.
The work is a folder of files on a computer you control. You want to see every change. You want a check that it still works. You would otherwise sit next to someone and point at the files.
They are teammates, not rivals. Build can help make the product. Bot can research customers, click through a problem on the website, draft the launch email, and keep the list honest. Chat is still the right door for “talk this through with me.”
Lesson 08 · How to give work
A chat question wants a good reply. A job for a helper wants finished work you can look at. Five parts. That is the whole beginner skill.
chat “Can you help with my weekly report?”
helper “Make this week’s report from the attached spreadsheet and yesterday’s notes. Five bullets, links in the text, a last section called ‘Decisions needed.’ Do not email anyone. If a number is missing, ask me — don’t guess.”
Pick the request a helper can actually run with.
Lesson 09 · First jobs
Do not begin with “run my company.” Begin with look-and-draft work. Watch what it does. Add sending and saving only after you trust the drafts.
After you install the app and make one focused bot.
Next: compare this week’s numbers to last week’s, and change nothing. Then: draft emails, still do not send.
Only if you have a folder of files on your computer. Ask a computer-comfortable friend to help you install if you need to.
Next: “Fix the login problem and check that it works.” Then a small change with “show me first, do not save it for good.”
